Montek Singh Ahluwalia
Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, India

Montek Singh Ahluwalia is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission for India. He has been a key figure in India’s economic reforms from the early 1980s onwards. He joined the Government of India in 1979 as an Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Finance after which he held a several positions, including Special Secretary to the Prime Minister; Commerce Secretary; Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs; Finance Secretary in the Ministry of Finance; a Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister; Member of the Planning Commission in New Delhi. Between 1968 and 1979 he held various positions in the World Bank Research Department. He was the first Director of the Independent Evaluation Office of the International Monitory Fund, a position he took up in 2001. He resigned in 2004 to take up his current position.

A prolific writer on various strategic aspects of economics, he has made valuable contributions to a number of prominent Indian and international journals and books. He co-authored ‘Re-distribution with Growth: An Approach to Policy’, published in 1975, and in 2004 he write ‘Reforming the Global Financial Architecture’, Economic Paper No.41, Commonwealth Secretariat, London.

He earned his B.A. (Hons) degree in New Delhi and his M.A. and M.Phil. Degrees from the University of Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar. His published works include papers in various professional journals and several contributions to books. Mr. Ahluwalia is married to Isher Judge Ahluwalia and they have two children.

 

 

Tan Sri Dato‘ Hj Muhyiddin Hj Mohd Yassin
Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Hj Mohd Yassin is the Deputy Prime Minister as well as the Education Minister of Malaysia. Prior to these positions, he served as the Minister of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia from 18th Match 2008 to 9th April 2009. He has been a Member of Parliament of Malaysia since 1978 and has held several posts in the Government, which includes, Parliament Secretary of Foreign Ministry, Deputy Minister of the Federal Territory, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Chief Minister of Johor, Minster of Youth and Sports, Minster of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, as well as Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry. Tan Sri Muhyiddin graduated from the University of Malaya.

 

 

Dr. Nouriel Roubini
Professor of Economics, Stem School of Business, New York University

Nouriel Roubini is the co-founder and chairman of Roubini Global Economics, an innovative economic and geo-strategic information service and consultancy named one of the best economics websites by Business Week, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal and The Economist. He is also a professor of economics at New York University’s Stern School of Business.

From 1998-2000, he served as the Senior Economist for International Affairs at the White House Council of Economic Advisors and then the Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for International Affairs at the U.S. Treasury Department, helping to resolve the Asian and global financial crises among other issues. The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and numerous other prominent public and private institutions have drawn upon his consulting expertise.

He has published over 70 theoretical empirical and policy papers on international macroeconomic issues and co-authored the books Political Cycles: Theory and Evidence (M.I.T. Press, 1997) and Bailouts or Bail-ins?, Responding to Financial Crises in Emerging Markets (Institute for International Economics, 2004), and his latest bestseller is named - Crisis Economics – A Crash Course in the Future of Finance (Penguin Press, 2010).




Korn Chatikavanij 
Minister of Finance, Thailand

H.E. Mr. Korn Chatikavanij has been serving as the Finance Minister since December 2008 and is currently the Deputy Leader of the Democrat Party Thailand. He won his first seat in the General Elections in February 2005. Prior to entering politics H.E. Mr. Korn Chatikavanij was the president of JP Morgan Securities (Thailand) until October 2004, having sold to JP MorganChase in 1999 his shares in JF Thanakom Securities, the company he co-founded with Finance One, a local finance company, and Jardine Fleming. At an early age, he also worked at SG Warburg, London.

His former positions include the Deputy Chairperson of the House Finance and Banking Committee and the Board Member of Jardine Flemming International Holding Limited, Ayudhya Jardine CMG Life Assurance, Thai Gypsum Products and Special Olympics Organising Committee, Thailand.

H.E. Mr. Korn Chatikavanij graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) from Oxford University (St. John’s College), the United Kingdom. Prior to that, he attended Winchester College in the United Kingdom.

H.E. Mr. Korn Chatikavanij is married to Mrs. Vorakorn Chatikavanij, with three sons and one daughter.




Timothy C. Draper 
Founder and Managing Director, Draper Fisher Jurvetson

Timothy C. Draper is the Founder and a Managing Director of Draper Fisher Jurvetson. His original suggestion to use "viral marketing" was instrumental to the successes of Hotmail and YahooMail, and has been adopted as a standard marketing technique by hundreds of businesses. Previous successes include: Skype (EBAY), Overture.com (YHOO), Baidu (BIDU), Parametric Technology (PMTC), Hotmail (MSFT), PLX Technologies (PLXT), Preview Travel (TVLY), Digidesign (AVID), and others.Tim launched the DFJ Global Network, an international network of early-stage venture capital funds with offices in over 30 cities around the globe.

Tim has been recognized as a leader in his field through numerous awards and honours, and has frequent TV, radio, and headline appearances. He was #52 on the list of the 100 most influential Harvard Alumni, and #7 on the Forbes Midas List. He was named Always-On #1 top venture capital deal maker for 2008.

Tim is the course creator and Chairman of BizWorld, a 501c3 organization built around simulated teaching of entrepreneurship and business to children. He also serves on the Harvard Business School Board of Dean’s Advisors.

He was a member of Singapore's International Economic Council and Ukraine's Orange Circle. He was on the Board of U.C. Berkeley's Haas School of Business. He has a BS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.




Jimmy Wales 
Founder, Wikipedia

Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, was ranked 12th by Forbes Magazine in their first annual “Web Celeb 25” List and named one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People.”Wales created the first open-source online encyclopaedia truly by the people and for the people. Wikipedia's articles have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world, and nearly all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet. Having steadily risen in popularity since its inception, Wikipedia currently ranks among the top ten most-visited web sites worldwide. In May 2008, Jimmy Wales co-chaired the annual World Economic Forum on the Middle East, the foremost global gathering of political, business and cultural leaders.

In 2007, The World Economic Forum recognized Wales as one of its “Young Global Leaders.” This prestigious award acknowledges the top 250 young leaders across the world for their professional accomplishments, their commitment to society, and their potential to contribute to shaping the future of the world. In an address to the forum, Mr. Wales declared that the internet will act as a catalyst in the promotion of democracy. “We do not hear much from everyday people; the Internet can change that. It is going to change political dynamics.”

Wikipedia is operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization Mr. Wales founded to encourage the growth, development and distribution of free, multilingual content, and to provide the full content of these wiki-based projects to the public free of charge. As part of his work at his for-profit company, Wikia, Inc., Wales is developing a human-powered search engine, Search Wikia, which will be based on the same open, transparent, community-driven principles of Wikia and Wikipedia.

He was a member of Singapore's International Economic Council and Ukraine's Orange Circle. He was on the Board of U.C. Berkeley's Haas School of Business. He has a BS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

 

 

Haruhiko Kuroda 
President, Asian Development Bank

Mr. Haruhiko Kuroda is the President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Chairperson of ADB's Board of Directors. He was elected President by ADB's Board of Governors in November 2004 and was re-elected in November 2006 for a new five-year term.

Before joining ADB, Mr. Kuroda was Special Advisor to the Cabinet of Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and a professor at the Graduate School of Economics at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo.

In a career spanning nearly four decades, Mr. Kuroda has represented Japan's Ministry of Finance at a number of international monetary conferences as Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs.

During his terms as Director-General of the International Bureau and as Vice Minister of Finance between 1997 and 2003, Mr. Kuroda helped design and implement the US$30 billion Miyazawa Initiative – Japan's response to Asian economies hit by the 1997-1998 financial crisis. Under his leadership, Japan helped Asian nations establish the Chiang Mai Initiative, a network of currency swap agreements designed to avert another crisis.

Born on 25 October 1944, Mr. Kuroda holds a BA in Law from the University of Tokyo and a Master of Philosophy in Economics from the University of Oxford.

He joined the Ministry of Finance in 1967. Eight years later, he was seconded to the International Monetary Fund. After returning to the Ministry, Mr. Kuroda assumed a number of senior posts in the Ministry's international finance and taxation bureaus. While Deputy Director-General of the International Finance Bureau, he was responsible for Japan's official development assistance as well as relations with multilateral development financial institutions including ADB.

Mr. Kuroda served as President of the Ministry's research arm, the Institute of Fiscal and Monetary Policy, for one year before returning to the International Bureau as Director-General. Two years later, he was promoted to Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs, responsible for policy planning, international coordination, and external representation.

After retiring from the Ministry in 2003, Mr. Kuroda was appointed Special Advisor to the Cabinet of Prime Minister Koizumi to advise the premier on international monetary issues.

He has authored several books on monetary policy, exchange rate, international finance policy coordination, international taxation, and international negotiations.
